IT'S ABOUT TIME...

As I write this in the year 1999, we are about to witness a significant moment, as one millennium draws to a close while a new one bears down on us. We are close to finding out, finally, how true many of the speculations on the future, from computer malfunction to the end of the world, would be. In a sense, we humans must be the only specie of life on earth that defines time the way we do, anticipating the changing of the millennium with a kind of trepidation and significance probably lost on the rest of the animal kingdom. During times like these, I suspect ordinary folks like myself spend more time than usual reflecting on the grand design, stretching our thoughts on time periods much longer than the three-quarter century that most of us are expected on average to live. All at once, the past, present and future stand at the same place in our minds, as we are confronted with the encroaching sense of our own mortality.
